Rules of Thumb

Design for Minimum Waste

Rules of Thumb

Key Indicators / Prompt
  • Introduce initiatives to encourage waste minimisation at project inception, design and procurement.
Think about the materials and processes used in construction and how the building is designed. Design to avoid waste; careful specification and ordering will assist.

  • Design efficiently, only order the amount of building materials needed.
Think about the waste hierarchy and apply that to procurement.

  • Design for Recycling.
Design-in a space where sorted material for recycling can be stored in a location that makes it easy for the occupier to use. Design the access so collection vehicles can collect the sorted waste.

  • Minimise waste in the construction phase.
Contact the Minerals Planning Authority and environment Agency to identify techniques that encourage the reduction, reuse and recovery of waste.

  • Recycle waste on site as much as possible.
Maximise the use of recycled materials in construction. Contact BRE Centre for Waste and Recycling for advice on waste materials and by products in construction http://www.bre.co.uk/recycle

  • Manage the production, storage and disposal of waste - set targets.
Have you appointed an Environmental Champion? Is there a waste management plan that highlights action to be taken for all types of waste? Ensure the plan prioritises actions to achieve set targets that can be monitored over time.

The above 'Rules of Thumb' relate to 'Designing for Minimum Waste' within the Sustainability Guide.
